New Imaging Option for Metastatic Breast Cancer Coming to New Mexico
New Mexico Cancer Center is pleased to announce that it will soon become the first facility in New Mexico to offer Cerianna® (fluoroestradiol F-18) PET imaging, an advanced diagnostic tool designed to help evaluate estrogen receptor (ER)-positive recurrent or metastatic breast cancer.
Cerianna PET imaging provides a non-invasive way to assess estrogen receptor expression throughout the body, offering clinicians valuable information beyond what can be obtained from a single-site biopsy. By visualizing ER-positive disease across multiple lesions, the technology may help identify tumor heterogeneity, support treatment planning, and provide additional insight when biopsy is difficult, risky, or impractical.
Approximately 70% of breast cancers are estrogen receptor-positive, and receptor status can change over time as disease progresses. Cerianna PET imaging can help physicians better understand the current biology of metastatic disease and complement existing diagnostic and treatment decision-making processes.
The addition of Cerianna further strengthens New Mexico Cancer Center and Health Specialists of New Mexico’s comprehensive breast cancer program, which brings together specialists across medical oncology, breast surgery, radiation oncology, genetic counseling, breast imaging, clinical research, and supportive care. Patients benefit from a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach designed to coordinate care from diagnosis through survivorship. The program is also home to one of New Mexico’s only all-female breast cancer treatment teams, offering patients access to experienced specialists dedicated exclusively to the care of women facing breast cancer.
New Mexico Cancer Center anticipates beginning patient imaging in early August and will soon begin accepting referrals. The study is intended for use as an adjunct to biopsy in patients with recurrent or metastatic breast cancer with suspected ER-positive disease.
